7 Beauty Trends for Summer
There is just something about summer which provokes fabulous changes. Perhaps, it’s the warmer temps which promote the need for lighter layers and softer make-up or, maybe, it’s just time to shake off the go-to styling which got us all through winter in-tact.
Whatever the reason, we love that summer invites a little mix-up in styling and where best to start than with your make-up collection? It’s because of the change-provoking potential of summer that we’ve put together the very best beauty trends for this season, bringing you up to speed on how to get each of the on-trend looks.
Clown contouring has been trending for a while thanks to vlogger BellaDeLune who showed us how an exaggerated method of applying highlight, shadow, and blush look can look totally flawless when blended. Christened ‘clown countering’, the look is actually subtler than the name suggests, although there are lots of variations on blending depending on the occasion. For summer, we suggest playing around with more highlighter and less shadow, and don’t forget to finish with powder for a shine-free finish.
Dive into Dreadlocks
Dreadlocks have been having a bit of a moment thanks to their recent stint at New York Fashion Week where they popped up at Nicola Miller, Desigual, and even Tommy Hilfiger. In fact, Hilfiger went one further by resurrecting colorful hair-wraps – retro colorful hair-threads, that were once a 90s souvenir from holidays abroad, are totally back.
Perfect Your Plait
If dreadlocks are a step too far, dive into plaits which are a much more romantic interpretation. In fact, plaits are so on point for Summer that Guido Palau (for Dior) was quoted as saying “there’s a plait to suit everyone”. Have fun experimenting which plait is your perfect soul-mate – Dutch, French, Pancake or Looped!
In really exciting news, the fringe is well and truly back with the only irk being the length which is uber long. In fact, both Wangs (Alexander and Vera) are in favor of a very long fringe (think down to the eyes) which we know can be irritating for summer. The good news is that, this length lends itself to side-sweeping and pinning back when temps do rise.
Pop of Colour
We all know that summer is the season of color, but how about bringing your color game to your make-up? Forget about restricting color to your eye-shadow, this season color is applied on brows (think white, peach, and lilac) while purple and acid-bright orange make for luxurious lips. The braver beauty-followers can follow trends straight from Nina Ricci who endorse violet, aquamarine and tangerine hues for both lips and eyes.
When it comes to nails, this season is all about short and rounded. In fact, the catwalks have been awash with shorter nails for some time but this season it’s bigger than ever thanks to the fashion world’s nod to androgyny. Either way, this trend equals less maintenance and short nails can look really cute in a wide range of colors.
All That Glitters
The fashion house Givenchy propelled face diamantes into mainstream when they glued them to model’s faces during New York Fashion Week. While their interpretation also included mesh and tulle, the high-street’s version is a little softer with colorful rhinestones and glitter dotted on cheekbones. And, it wasn’t just cheekbones that were shining, dramatic glitter lips were also on display at DKNY and Fendi, while glittery cuticles were ‘de rigueur’ at Rodarte.
